How to tell YOUR story
We were recently fortunate to have Samantha Elphick, a fellow goddess and author at our goddess gathering in November. She shared how she was inspired to write her first novel and how many could do the same. As a big proponent of journal writing I have often been tempted to write a story of a fictional character (who somewhat resembled my exploits) but feared taking that first step- putting pen to paper. I haven’t done so yet but who knows….
If I were to finally gather my thoughts and decide to write, here are the recommended steps in doing so:
It’s been recommended that you read others memoirs to decide the type of writing format you are most comfortable with. Decide on whether you want to tell of a certain period in one’s life or the full story. As you contemplate this, think of photos or drawings you would like to accompany these times as part of the finished product or an inspiration as you write. Surrounding yourself with actual memories is great at sparking your flow onto the paper.
Set an appointment with yourself each and every day. Keep that appointment. Write a page or a thought and little by little the text will come together. Start small, like an essay. Don’t overwhelm yourself. It’ll make the entire process a little easier.
Some authors have recommended that you start your story with a life-changing event. You can either go back from that time or forward, to today. Whichever way works for you will also work for the reader. It’s like verbally telling a story: which way would be easier for you to share. Remember the details. They often are the crux to the story of what you want to be told.
Then find a trusted friend to read what you have written. This person is someone with whom you trust your project’s best presentation. This person is your editor and editing is often the difference between being understood or misunderstood. Have them take their time with this process and honor their opinion. After all, you asked them to help you!
Finally, write – just write from your heart. Tell the story as you want it to be told. Your passion will be felt through the pages. After you are done, toast yourself on a job well done….

Every life IS a story. You never know who will find inspiration from your words. Thanks for this article Val!
