Why Do I Clean Out My Closet So Often?
August 25, 2010 – 11:35 am | No Comment

One of the previous articles submitted inspired me to step into my closet once again and clear out some of the items that I have in there that have not seen the light of day. What a waste! Even though I’ll donate all that I clear out to a neighborhood charity, I had to sit and ponder why. Why did I buy these items in the first place?

Creating a Personal Mission Statement

Creating a Personal Mission Statement

I’ve spoke to so many people as of late that are in the process of redefining their life’s purpose and direction.  They want to make changes, take another path. I too have pondered what direction I want to go towards and how I’ll live the second half of my life.  Then it dawned on me.  In my business life, the companies I worked for always had a mission statement.  This statement was the focus in which all employees were to direct their energies.  It was a template for what the company held dear and how it would direct its revenue.  So I thought, why not create a personal mission statement?

So I did just that. My mission statement is (not that you asked…):

“To live an authentic life based on the principles of  family, community, faith and service and to celebrate the women who inspire me as I hope to inspire others.”

You’re probably asking what does this all mean.  It’s given me a focus.  As many of you know, I’ve been the founder of many women based organizations. I started the Listening Center at Broward Community College in the late 70′, early 80’s which was a counseling hub and activist center.  I began Mother’s United, a play group in Wellington, was the Executive Director of a girl’s only alternative school and created the Goddess Within One club. All focused on the empowerment of women- my passion.  Through this passion I’ve attempted to model for my children, family and friends, what I hold dear and what I choose to direct my energies towards.  Does the mission statement really mean anything to anyone else?  No, not really but it does mean a great deal to me. It helps me to remain goal oriented and accomplished. It’s how I want others to see my life’s purpose, my epitaph.  So, what would your mission statement be?  It might be fun to create one of your own.

I have a mission statement for my work but have never thought of one for myself. What a great idea Val.

Great idea Val! This could benefit couples, teenagers, even families.

“There is no right or wrong way to write a personal mission statement. Personal mission statement is a fancy way of saying “these are my goals, and the code of ethics I’m going to use to live my life” So long as its meaningful to you, then thats all that matters, after all, you’re going to be living by it.”
