Alternative Gift Ideas
Instead of spending large for big birthdays, think sentimental. If someone you know is turning 30, 40, 50, etc., find photographs of their lives. You can either tack them on a board, or spread them on a table in groupings. The groupings can include the early years, the meeting and marriage of the partner, the kids, their immediate family, their friends, etc. You can decorate the table with flowers, candles, confetti. Later, you can take the photos and put them in an album creating an original, inexpensive gift. If you’re having a party people will gravitate toward the table of photos.
Recently a couple who just got married and instead of wedding gifts, they asked people to donate money to fund a school in Africa through Save the Children. We’ve all heard about the over the top weddings of late. Maybe it’s time to scale it back all around. It’s always good to pay it forward and there are tons of charities that are hurting right now.
Other suggestions include picture frames, favorites recipes, scented candles, bath oils or salts.

Sometimes I think the best alternative gift to give someone is the gift of time. To spend quality time with someone is priceless and memorable. Parties are fabulous and being adorned with gifts is great, (don’t get me wrong) but when a friend has made a special point to arrange one on one time with me- it’s a gift from the heart and I treasure that time together.
In December I found http://www.worldvision.org and donated many gifts in honor of friends and loves ones. Instead of giving a scarf or box of chocolates I decided to donate gifts of shelter and education for young women, soccer balls, medical supplies to name a few. It’s amazing how far $20 can go for those in dire need of clean water, food and clothing. You can donate as little or as much as you want, in a country of your choosing.
I encourage you to visit their site and keep them in mind the next time you want to GIVE a gift.
Val, I agree the time spent with loved ones is indeed a gift. With most of my friends and all of my family out of state I cherish the time I have with them!
